Obituary for Don Richard Batten


Don Richard Batten, age 88, passed away April 13, 2018 in Pikeville, Kentucky. He was born September 17, 1929 the son of the late O. S. and Pauline Cooper Batten. Don is a graduate of Pikeville High School in 1947, The University of Kentucky with a B. S. in Civil Engineering in 1952 and a B. S. in Mining Engineering in 1956. Don was a Korean War Air Force Veteran serving from 1952 until 1957. He served at Sparrovohn, Alaska Air Force Station long range radar site. Mr. Batten was discharged as a Captain in the Air Force Reserve in 1966. Don founded Batten and Batten Engineers in 1956 and Engineers Incorporated in 1964. For many years Don was on the managing board of Big Sandy Company, L. P. in Boston, Ma. He served on the Pikeville High School Board from 1971 untill 1978, The Pikeville Little League Baseball Board, the Pikeville High School Hall of Fame Committee, the Pike County Bowl Committee, was a member of Pikeville Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Pikeville Kiwanis Club. He was inducted into the Pikeville High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, the Pikeville High School Distinguished Alumni in 2003, and received the Pike County Bowl Legends Award in 2012.

Don Richard Batten is survived by; his wife, Donna Batten, two sons, Bruce (Dana) Batten and Mark (Belinda) Batten, four grandchildren, Clark Batten, Noah Batten, Jessica Batten, and Seth Batten, three great grandchildren, Gavin Batten, Amelia Batten, and Colin Batten.

A private graveside service will be observed.
